North Dakota lawmakers could start the process of adding a new source of power.

House Bill 1025 would allocate $500,000 towards developing and presenting a study on how feasible nuclear energy would be. It also would look into the environmental and economic impacts.

Sen. David Houge, R-Minot, said the state needs to think long-term when it comes to power generation.

“It’s just a daunting process. I think the sooner we start investigating this, the better off the state of North Dakota will be,” said Hogue.

A representative with Xcel Energy said they have nuclear sites in Minnesota that members of the North Dakota legislature recently visited.

Nuclear reactors generate about 18% of power in the United States, according to Xcel.

The House Energy and Natural Resources Committee made no recommendation Thursday.
